Not every distro out there is well known. One can even go so far as to declare that some of them have active opposition against them. It is these little guys that do not always have the coverage that they deserve. So starting with this blog post, I will raise awareness of an interesting journey begun by Neowin forum members.
Shift Linux is a distribution that was formerly based on Morphix, but now has an Ubuntu base. Their 0.6.5 release has begun the journey towards 1.0 status. Here's a bit from their release announcement:
There are three editions: GNOME, Lite, and KDE. So whatever your favorite desktop environment is, one of the three CD's will likely cover it. If not, then you are free to pick your own desktop environment, since this is Ubuntu-based.Shift Linux 0.6.5 is the first public preview release of Shift Linux One. The version number may be confusing, but the team is focused on a solid 1.0 release soon. Shift Linux comes in 3 different flavors, Gnome, Lite, and KDE. All 3 are based on brand-new Ubuntu Hardy Beta 1 packages.
We have also added in our own customizations such as the Shift Original theme in Gnome, present in 0.5 and 0.6, Shift Linux wallpaper, and other packages not included in the Ubuntu release, such as Gnome-Do, as seen in the screenshots. This release is installable. Shift is a free, GPL-based Linux distribution that can be freely distributed or modified.
Again, I have not tested this distro myself. What I find interesting is the concept of a journey. The whole project has the aim of being a learning experience. So what about the naysayers who may not like that they are not doing this distro from scratch? The team simply asks for said distro not to be attacked, but constructive criticism is more than welcome. Want to find out more? Although, some of the Loco's have split off and have actually been civil to other distro members. The California Loco's come to mind in this mention.
