Welcome to 64-bit Land!

Thomas Holbrook II | WE ARE *NIXED

Well, this is the first time I tried this ever. You see, I am running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS 64-bit on my desktop system. It took forever to get my Dell LCD monitor working (it can be finicky at times). The system seems to be running fine, but... it is the first time ever that I am running a 64-bit OS on my Athlon64 system. Hopefully, everything will run smoother than ever, but time will tell on that. So other than RAM capacity, what is the different between 32-bit and 64-bit systems? Does it mean better performance? Feel free to comment.

I rather doubt if 32-bit has better performance then 64-bit. See, there is a distribution for practically every type of pc and/or hardware. There is _always_ a way to get it working in the way you want, with maybe the exception of modern games. On the other side, most Linux-user don't play computer games. Well, except for doom (II) or Quake3. Sometimes it's harder to get it working, sometimes it's easy as Goblin pie, but it's _always_ fun. Although frustration may be the predecessor of - eventually - fun, pride, happiness or however you feel when finished. Personally: I think it's great to get stuff decently working on the most impossible (old, rare hardware, et cetera) systems. Yeah, it's fun to be forced to use your brain to get it better working, not regarding hardware. To me, a PII is just as much fun as a AMD64.
